Spanky

When I got Spanky (Husky-Shepherd mix, now 7 months old) he was only 6 weeks old and a tiny little guy but I knew he was going to be a big boy, and what’s worse than a misbehaved dog? A BIG misbehaved dog! Spanky (like most puppies) was a force to be reckoned with — small, mighty and determined — it was his way or the high way and I was in over my head. I was connected with Allie only a couple of weeks after becoming a dog-mom and my main concern was his mouthing. Those tiny, shark-like needle teeth had me howling with tears of frustration and I didn’t know what to do. I had no idea how much I still needed to learn about dog behavior and training before I met Allie. To this day I thank my lucky stars (and my friend Kelly) for putting her in our lives. At the time, Spanky had not received his full immunizations and Allie got us started on our training temporarily via Skype until he was ready to be out in the wild! I was skeptical, dog training over video chat? But it worked super well! We did 4 online sessions followed by 10 in-person sessions (sold separately). I’m very grateful I was able to start Spanky at such a young age, and now I have many great tools at my disposal so that I can maintain a great relationship with my dog for the rest of our lives. Not only did we get the mouthing under control, we got spanky swimming, running through obstacle courses and most importantly: listening to me, respecting me and following my commands. Foundation Style Dog Training is the way to go: It’s straight-forward, simple and verifiably effective — you really learn how to communicate with your dog in a way that makes sense to them. Allie is knowledgeable and has a wonderful coaching style. I felt like I was learning from a caring friend. My favorite part about working with Allie was that it was completely hands-on. Since I was working with Spanky directly (instead of having a stranger handle him) we both felt safe, comfortable and were able to learn together at our own pace. Every Dog/Owner duo is different and Allie will cater to your dog’s unique needs according to their age, breed, personality, etc. You will not have a pet store cookie-cutter training experience with her; she will help find what’s right for you and your dog. Spanky loves Allie and loved going to class! Allie makes sure that you start with the basics so that you can build a good foundation and then keep building. Foundation Style Dog Training is transparent and humane — there is no room for disrespect or any kind of abuse in the methods taught by Allie. She is extremely passionate and really takes care of you; your dog’s success is important to her and the sky is the limit! Allie gave us full-service training and then some; she has truly changed our lives. I went from blood, tears and feeling overwhelmed to having a great relationship with my amazing dog. She not only offers training services, she is also a great guide and resource to have for anything regarding your dog and their health and happiness. She helped us find the right gear, the right food, the right bed, the right supplements — you name it. I know I can text her any time with questions or concerns and she will be there at the drop of a hat – I don’t know how she does it all! Her work ethic and dedication are admirable. I personally started working with Allie in the summer, so Spanky got to learn how to swim! No matter the season, I’m sure Allie has something special up her sleeve to make your training fun, productive and memorable. She always treated us with respect and made sure we were moving forward. I only got 14 sessions with Allie, but we made a tremendous amount of progress during our meetings. I’m looking forward to attending some of the group activities, such as Pack Walks, Dog-Handling Olympics, and other fun social drills and learning experiences that she offers for free. Because Allie was such an amazing coach I will definitely be buying more sessions when I can. There are so many things you can do with your dog once you understand and respect each other! I have my eye on protection training and crate-pulling next. I recommend Allie to every dog parent I know and I can promise you will not regret working with her.

Hiro and Eva

1) What prompted you to seek professional help for you and your dog?

Honestly, I have been looking for professional help for literally several years! I have a Shina Inu (Hiro 5 y/o) & a deaf Border Collie mix (Eva 9 y/o). Shiba Inus are basically mini Akitas. Hiro is tenacious, reactive & sensitive. I wanted so baldly to hike with Hiro without the risk of him biting another dog & to actually enjoy our neighborhood walks. Because the ugly truth, was walking Hiro felt like a chore none of us wanted to do. He’d lunge at dogs, barked & would redirect his bite towards Eva or us. Hiro had ZERO recall. He was an opportunist with the door and would seize the opportunity as often as they came. Hiro would bolt down the driveway and run full speed to the neighborhood park one block away. He did bite a small dog on his last great escape. Which brought up the battle with re homing him out of desperation but didn’t we want to give up on our guy. Eva, my Border Collie mix is our sweet deaf angel. After we rescued her I learned that a lot of owners used vibrating e-collars to communicate with their dogs off leash. I had zero clue on how to implement this and knew I’d better leave it to the pros.

2) Were your concerns addressed? Was the training plan simple and effective?

Were my concerns addresses?! OMG YES!!! Was the plan simple yet effective? 100% YES Allie always updates your Google Doc for easy reference on your session with feedback and goals for the week. Foundational style training paired with premack principle has been eye opening and life changing. You know the saying, “ You’ll get dessert if you eat all your dinner.” Well that’s Premack Principle. Not only do we understand it but the dogs do too! Allie works on replacing the undesired behavior with desired behavior and the dogs get treats, affection & freedom in return. Its pure magic.

3) Was your dog happy and comfortable with the methods used?

Eva and Hiro LOVE going to Allie’s house. It’s the highlight of their week.

4) Did you feel like the training was transparent and humane?

Allie taught us how to be fair to the dogs. The goal is less corrections, so we find ways to prevent our dogs from messing up. For example, with learning “Leave it” we can tell Hiro “Leave it” on walks with things we are passing like a dog across the street walking the opposite direction. Hiro only has to “leave it” while we are passing them which is quick and then the temptation is gone and he got minimal corrections and lots of love for giving us the desired behavior – walking past the dog without looking at it. Allie always has the dogs physical, mental and emotional state at the forefront of all the training sessions & their day to day life. We move at both our pace and the dog’s pace. She has taught us how to lookout for body language that means they are stressed or confused.

5) Allie at Rogue K9 Academy Claims to offer FULL SERVICE training….did she?

Allie is always available via text and phone calls. She’s even made videos for us in the moment of needing clarity! I mean if that isn’t full service I don’t what is!

What else (if anything) could you add to give a personal perspective on your overall experience?

Full disclosure: 4 YEARS AGO We did work with a private trainer who came to our house, but he never felt like a good fit and wasn’t concerned about HOW Hiro (my Shiba) was feeling. He just wanted to assert dominance and submit Hiro into commands. So after working with him the hunt continued. I have reached out to literally every single Shiba Inu rescue in Southern California to inquire who they use for professional training. I have spoken to SO many trainers I have lost count. Most of the trainers would suggest board & train after listening to my concerns, but I knew I wanted a hands on approach to training I wanted to learn how to work with my dogs & to understand where the behavior was stemming from. Allie not only delivers 100% hands on approach (she doesn’t handle your dogs- YOU do) she has sent me countless videos & material to read to better understand dogs natural behavior & body language. We don’t punish our dogs for how they are feeling. We replace the undesired behavior with desired behavior and then correct when they break the command. Training isn’t all one sided. Dogs aren’t bad or jerks. They don’t understand what we want and we don’t speak their language. Allie bridges that gap beautifully. She saved our pack when we felt desperately lost. Torn on the decision to surrender Hiro to a rescue. I am forever grateful to have crossed paths with her. THANK YOU ALLIE!!!!

Tanner

A bit lengthy, but that’s because of what Tanner and I have been through and how pivotal Allie has been in our lives.

1) What prompted you to seek professional help for you and your dog?

My dog Tanner, began to show noticeable (to the average eye) behavior that I thought was aggressive and unlike his usual behavior. We had moved out of my dad’s house and into another house with a roommate. At first it seemed that Tanner and our new roommate got along just fine, but then he started becoming uneasy around her (about 4-5 months in), and then it got to the point where if I was home with him and our roommate came home, he wouldn’t let her in the house. He would growl and bark at her with the hair on his back standing up and wouldn’t let her inside. And then our landlord came over to meet with me one day, and when I opened the front door to let her in, he aggressively jumped over the couch at her while barking and growling, and I caught him practically mid air so he didn’t actually get to her. Basically, things were getting way out of hand and I had no idea what to do with my dog, and we got kicked out of our house. My heart was broken, I had multiple breakdowns and was so confused as to what switched in him and why he was becoming this unpredictable, aggressive, and dangerous dog. I had multiple people telling me to find him a new home, because we “get dogs to better our lives, not worsen our lives”. Tanner was causing me so much stress, and finally cost us our living situation. Although Tanner’s behavior was upsetting me, the thought of giving him up, was even more upsetting to me. Thankfully, I got Allie’s contact through a mutual friend and our journey to sanity began.

2) Were your concerns addressed? Was the training plan simple and effective?

Allie came over to my house right away, prepared for an aggressive and dangerous dog, and quickly saw that he was just confused and mislead. She had Tanner and I walk around the yard with him on leash, and observed our interaction and his personality. Once she saw why he was acting out in the ways he did, she knew exactly what needed to be done to capitalize on his true nature, and begin restructuring our relationship and rebuilding our trust in each other. My concerns were absolutely addressed, and the training plan was and is simple and effective. Allie gives me simple direction that works if I work it and follow through with patience, consistency, and understanding.

3) Was your dog happy and comfortable with the methods used?

Yes, Tanner is relieved and much more confident than before we started working with Allie. He enjoys our training sessions and loves making me proud. He went from flinching when a bicycle rider rode by, to running alongside side me when I ride my dirtbike at the ranch, and following me when I’m in the tractor and in my truck. He trusts me. Working with Allie has given him a purpose in life and has allowed him to fulfill his desire to show me that he can be the best dog I could ever have. He used to show extreme signs of anxiety, and I rarely see his anxious behavior today. He’s much less affected by outside stimulation and much more energetically connected to me.

4) Did you feel like the training was transparent and humane?

Absolutely. Allie’s style of coaching me how to interact with my dog, therefore I’m doing almost all of the interacting with him, is nothing but transparent and humane.

5) Allie at Rogue K9 Academy claims to offer full service training. Did she?

Yes. Allie has improved my relationship with Tanner more than I thought was possible. She always responds to my questions/concerns in a timely manner. Her calm and encouraging responses to my breakdowns in the beginning of our journey, meant more to me than I can describe. I can’t even begin to imagine what my life and Tanner’s life would be like right now if it weren’t for her guidance. As unimaginable of giving him up was for me, I gave it honest thought, because of what was happening to my life due to Tanner’s and my disconnect. We now have a place of our own and go on adventures often. He’s my buddy and I deeply love him. I understand him, and we truly have each other’s backs. “Full service training” doesn’t even begin to describe what Allie has provided for Tanner and I.

Oreo

We brought home our puppy at 4 months old and he was not the “puppy” everyone expected him to be.

He seemed very timid & shy. We knew that it was going to take time to adjust to his new home but we also noticed that he was hesitant towards my husband. At that point we decided to search for a dog trainer who would help us with socialization.

I interviewed 3 different dog trainers and after speaking to Allie, who was recommended by a friend, I was convinced that she was perfect for what my family was seeking. During our first visit, Allie made some observations about our puppy’s personality and pointed out a few things that we should be aware of in the future and sure enough she was spot on! Every issue or concern we’ve had with our puppy has been addressed in detail. Allie gives simple but thorough explanation of the training plan. She includes videos, some personalized just for you, to clarify the training exercises. One of her main goals is to make sure that the plan is clear and precise so that you and your dog are successful. Our puppy has responded positively with every method of training we’ve used so far. To support transparency of her training Allie includes not only her expertise but other resources to help support her methods and philosophy. Allie is 100% FULL SERVICE! Even before confirming our training with her she offered to speak on the phone to help give us some advice. Since then, she has been available to us without any hesitation. Allie emphasizes the importance of making the right corrections immediately if needed. Therefore, making herself available to us as much as possible whether by phone, text, or Skype. One thing that stood out to me and speaks volumes is that from the first training session she has included the entire family. Our goal for our puppy is to have a family dog that respects everyone equally and Allie shares that same goal. Including our young daughters in the training sessions has not only taught them to be pack leaders but also build confidence in being dog owners.

Sammi

1) What prompted you to seek professional help for you and your dog?
My girl was rescued from a field in the desert at 4weeks old and was the sweetest independent pup until I had her spayed.  She then became aggressive/protective towards other dogs and people she didn’t know and I didn’t know what to do.  Allie was working with some friends and their dog so I gave her a call not knowing if she could help.

2) Were your concerns addressed? Was the training plan simple and effective?
Absolutely! We have received skills and knowledge that I would’ve ever expected. I say this because never having a dog with her characteristics I didn’t know where to start without making things worse.

3) Was your dog happy and comfortable with the methods used?
Without a doubt! She needed the constructive yet positive reinforcement we received during our sessions. We both did… and we are not done with this process. It keeps getting better.

4) Did you feel like the training was transparent and humane?
Very, Allie made it clear on what she is all about and what she believes when it comes to her style of training.  I appreciate her honesty even when it‘s directed at my technique.

5) Allie at  Rogue K9 Academy Claims to offer FULL SERVICE training….did she?
Allie is very passionate about what she does and helping not only the dogs but us humans. Let’s face it we are a large percent of the problem.

What else (if anything) could you add to give a personal perspective on your overall experience?
Working with my Sammi under her supervision and her response has been life changing! We can actually go out in public and you don’t know what that means to me. Our dogs are our family and we take them camping and to the river. Sammi is a happy confident one year old Shepard heeler mix that will never have to be stuck in the yard or worse because of her aggression.

Thank you Allie McCain for everything
